Head of Boarding and Housemaster/mistress
Job Purpose
A boarding assistant takes a role as part of the boarding team, supporting the delivery of pastoral care to the school’s boarders. The role requires an approachable, positive and warm person who works well as part of a team. Working with other boarding staff, the post holder will be responsible for the supervision and guidance of and the safety and welfare of the boarding students.

Working Hours
Different shifts throughout the week with one day off a week, and every other weekend. Boarding staff are also expected to support the day school and cover the clinic where needed. Boarding staff also assist with activity camps.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- to ensure that the boarding students maintain a high standard of academic rigour, discipline, behaviour, manners and dress.
- to assist other members of the boarding team with the pastoral care and routines of boarding.To be visible, circulate regularly and accessible whenever possible. To spend time engaging with the children, running activities, promotion and taking of weekend trips, assisting with wake-ups and bedtimes and dining with the children.
- to promote a positive English speaking ethos in communal areas so that everybody can be included
- to encourage in all students a sense of commitment and responsibility to the rest of the School.
- to liaise with the parents and support with verbal and written translation.
- to help contribute to reports on each boarder when required.
- to attend all relevant meetings.
- to support keeping up-to-date records in the Houses. These will include correspondence of any significant importance e.g. incidents, parental contact, exeat, academic, weekend arrangements.
- to ensure that registration of students is efficiently carried out and recorded, in accordance with statutory requirements.
- to work with the Head of Boarding and Housemaster/mistress to ensure that new students are supported so that in a short space of time they feel comfortable in well-established routines.
- to ensure that policies are carried out in the House and that these policies remain constant across the Houses although these may differ depending upon the age of the boarders.
- to work with all members of the Boarding team to ensure that School Pastoral policies, in particular Bullying & Safeguarding Protection, are carried out within the house.
- to be actively involved in both Boarding and School events and activities including Sports Day, celebrations and performances.
- to support the Head of Boarding and Housemaster/mistress in creating the Boarding Houses at BIST a “home from home” so that the boarders may flourish academically, personally and socially.
Attributes and Skills
The post-holder should:
- be a loyal, supportive and positive member of staff
- possess excellent communication skills, orally and in writing, and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships
- have an ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with students, staff and parents from diverse backgrounds
- possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen and communicate
- possess good organisational skills and is computer literate
Requirements
The post-holder should:
- enjoy community life, and not resent its intrusion on privacy, nor its occasional calls for hard work at unsociable hours;
- have a solution-focused, positive and resilient approach;
- enjoy the company of young people for its own sake and have an easy rapport with them;
- pass all the school’s normal safeguarding checks
Minimum Qualifications
The post-holder should:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Strong command of both English and Chinese
