We’re two weeks into Term 3 now, and the term got off to an amazing start with what must have been Bromsgrove’s best Book Week ever. Even this week, it is fantastic to see almost every classroom door in the school decorated in the style of a famous book cover, and the buzz of reading still permeates the corridors of Primary and Secondary alike. And what an action-packed term we have ahead! Not only are our senior students about to embark on an examinations journey which will shape the rest of their lives, but Primary students are busy preparing both for the Primary FOBISIA Games in May and the Primary production of Aladdin later this term. Before we know it, the end of term will be upon us, and I hope that parents will quickly put in their diaries both the Year 13 Graduation and the Awards Ceremony and Review of the Year, which was such a highlight of last year’s calendar. In the meantime, I hope that this week’s Learning and Progress Conversations across Primary and Secondary have given all parents an invaluable window into their child’s achievement across the school.

Bromsgrove Secondary students were treated to a professional workshop by three of Bangkok’s finest Film, Video and Graphics artists on Friday 22 April.

Our guest speakers were Korn, who works in advertising and is studying Film in London, Pied, a video motion artists and Ram, a graphic designer.

The workshop explored their real life experiences of how to thrive in the competitive Film and Media industry, and also what it is like to live in London. The Year 8 and Year 13 students were also shown examples of professional graphics and video artwork, using the latest multimedia and graphics packages.

The students loved this experience, and, hopefully, it will be the first of many such visits.

“We have recently purchased and received many new classroom instruments at BIST, including this set of metallophones and xylophones. Students in KS3 have already benefited from the new instruments, using them to learn about and perform Indonesian Gamelan music.”

What a fantastic Book Week we have had! The children have enjoyed reading and listening to a variety of stories and books. We have also been learning and singing Nursery Rhymes and Tongue Twisters.

It has been so lovely to see how much the children have learned, and enjoyed themselves!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards this fantastic week! A special thank you to all the children who entered our competitions.. I am sorry that you could not all win but you all did so well; it was genuinely very difficult to choose winners!

Please have a look at the picture collages from an amazing and memorable week.

BIST students interested in studying business, finance or management at university got a little taste of undergraduate life on Wednesday April 20th, when Dr. Emilee Simmons from Leeds University Business School visited and gave an undergraduate style class entitled Social Capital Linked to Business Success. Students left with a much greater understanding of social capital and its importance in all elements of life, as well as an insight into possible teaching styles in undergraduate courses at top ranked universities.

We have rolled straight into an exciting new term here at Bromsgrove International School Thailand, with a literary adventure to welcome us all back after the Songkran break. It’s International Book Week and both students and staff are embracing the array of book-themed activities that the English Department have on offer. With reading marathons, reading stars and buddies, as well as library-related activities, all of us are fully embracing our love of literature, while students take photos of unsuspecting staff who have been ‘caught reading’ around the school.

The week began with two after-school, book-to-film screenings on Monday, featuring a couple of popular literary legends. The primary pupils were invited to be part of the audience for How to Train Your Dragon, written by Cressida Cowell, in which a hapless young Viking, who aspires to hunt dragons, becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he first assumed. Meanwhile, the secondary students were invited to watch Divergent, the first in a trilogy of dystopian fiction, written by Veronica Roth. In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns that she is a ‘Divergent’ and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes them dangerous before it’s too late.

As always, we are supporting the Polio Points scheme within our three houses – Taylor, Edwards and Walters – managing to save lives by earning Polio vaccinations for every four points, while enjoying the comradery of teamwork across the whole school. There are house competitions running throughout the week, with ‘extreme reading’ photos to be unveiled, as well as story retellings yet to be heard, and we still have plenty to be looking forward to as our International Book Week unfolds, with a special guest visit from a performance poet on Friday afternoon. It will be an exciting time for students and staff to experience the magic of poetry and spoken word, while we are all dressed up as our favourite literary heroes, characters, or idioms to celebrate literature for the last day of this jam-packed, fun-filled week.

In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at some of our extreme reading entries this year:

Tanapat Pichaikool (Peng) recently participated in the TGA Singha GolfChampionship from 31 March-3 April 2016 at Royal Hills Golf and Resorts. His scores (72, 72, 69 and 67) gave him a fantastic 4 under par, and earned him an excellent second place overall. Peng is now eligible to participate in the IMG Junior World Tournament in San Diego, USA in July. Congratulations, Peng!

Jade (Mrs Johnstone): “Being a part of Blood Brothers will be a memory and experience I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I got to work with both familiar and new faces and everyone helped each other out when it came to learning lines, pronunciation, building the set and keeping one another motivated. The fact that the performance is over is very emotional as it is the last school production I’ll ever get to perform in now that I’m graduating, but, as they always say, you’ve got to save the best ‘til last. So proud of everyone involved!”

Iga (Narrator): “It was truly inspiring to see every cast member being so committed to the show, even with all their school work and exams coming up. Also the teachers’ input in the play was amazing and helped motivate all of us to work hard, which was clearly shown in the final performance.”

IMG_6555Thames (Chorus): “Originally, I signed up for Blood Brothers just to help build the sets, as I’ve never acted before. After getting my roles, I decided to continue doing the show. The more months that passed, the more enjoyable rehearsals became. Working with new people, doing new things I’ve never done before, I can truly say that joining Blood Brothers was one of my most valuable experiences at school.”

Screen Shot 2559-03-31 at 13.16.23Daisy (Linda): “Overall the experience was exciting and exhilarating. The performance was nerve racking but at the same time, it was really fun being on stage with everyone.”

Pump (Milkman/Policeman): Learning lines is like making a new friend. At first, they may seem like a stranger but the more you learn them, the better relationship you can form with them.”

IMG_8103Thomas (Edward): “It was a phenomenal experience, being in a full-scale production of such an exciting musical. It was fascinating to explore the development of all the characters as they grew throughout the play.”

IMG_8155Shawn (Mickey): “It was something new. Something I would do again.”

Wednesday’s ‘Art & Design Workshops’ by three UK universities (Manchester Metropolitan University, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Gloucestershire) were a great success. Eighteen of our most talented artists were given a taste of what it can be like to study creative subjects at university. Students tried their hand at urban sketching, and were given a crash course on creative thinking, whilst also gaining an understanding of the breadth of higher education options available in this field. The Hadley Art Studio was a fantastic venue, with one of our guests commenting that it was “like working in a West Coast gallery”.
