Bromsgrove International School is now offering a fantastic opportunity for all students to participate in our After School Chinese Language programme.

Screen Shot 2559-06-16 at 08.45.08It was a huge privilege to be able to host the FOBISIA Primary Games at the end of May. Eleven schools travelled from all across Asia, bringing over 270 student athletes to compete, and 40 staff, as well as numerous parent supporters, to support them at the Games.

Having arrived on either the Wednesday or Thursday, the first day of competition for the athletes was the Tball competitions, held here at Bromsgrove Windsor Park Campus. It was a great day with some fierce competition and, in the end, a wonderful result as our A team took gold in their competition. The Games could not have got off to a better start!

Saturday saw the competition move to Chalerm Phrakiat 72nd Stadium for a day of football. We had 4 teams in action: 2 girls’ and 2 boys’ teams across both the A and B leagues. The teams performed brilliantly during a long, hot day, but all finished just outside of the medal places.

There were some great games from a number of the other schools competing and all the students really enjoyed the penalty shoot-outs that occurred in three of the four semi-final matches.

Sunday was the toughest day of competition. This again took place at the stadium, but with our focus shifting from team sports to the individual sports of athletics and swimming. The competition was yet again extremely tough, but over the course of a long day in the pool and around the track, we managed to take home over 50 individual medals. There were wonderful performances from all of our students, but it was the B team boys and girls who really shone on the final day of competition with Aaliyah, Amber and Jerry all collecting multiple medals and Sang Sang doing likewise for the A team.

It was such a memorable event, and one that was made even more special by the support and encouragement of our parent body.

Special thanks must be given to the families of Nathan and their team at Pan Sport and also Chompuu and their contacts with GAP. Their very generous gifts of both ‘playing’ and ‘relaxing’ uniforms were most welcome and, without them, the event would not have seemed anywhere near as great and nor would the team would not have looked so smart. Thank you!

As part of our topic on the UK, Year 1 and Year 2 got the chance to meet a piper and snare drummer from the Bangkok British Club Pipe band today. We were told all about the history of the instruments and the uniform and realised that our own school skirts are started, just like the kilts that the pipers wear. We were impressed with the volume and technicality of the playing and actually got a chance to play the instruments ourselves. Some of the children from our country dance ECA demonstrated a little highland fling and the Gay Gordon’s. This was an experience that won’t be easily forgotten and helped to bring our learning to life!

The year 10 and 11 Geography students visited the Klong Toey Community last Thursday.
Students worked with the Duang Prateep Foundation’s early years students. We took along loads of colorful modeling clay and had fun creating with the children.

We then spent time walking around the community. This gave us the opportunity to find out more about the lives of the people who live there.

In the afternoon we went to work with the charity Hang on Hangers which was founded in 2010 by Annika Jonasson and currently employs 22 women in Klong Toey.
If you would like to support the Klong Toey community we will have a range of items on sale in the art studio, Thursday afternoon. Please come and have a look. All the money will be going to the charities we visited.
Thank you to our amazing students for their help and respects for the community.

Friday 27th to Sunday 29th May 2016, Bromgsrove International School Thailand hosted the FOBISIA Primary Games. Eleven international schools* from across Asia visited the Windsor Park campus for the first of a three day event, followed by two days at the Chalerm Phrakiat 72nd Anniversary Stadium and concluding on the Sunday evening with an award ceremony at the Dusit Princess Hotel in Hua Mak, Bangkok.Screen Shot 2559-06-08 at 09.34.33
Friday was a mixed team T-ball competition and the Bromsgrove A Team won. All the teams played really well under the professional supervision of external FOBISIA umpires. The PTA provided a great selection of food and drinks for the students and spectators, many of whom could be seen wearing orange to support our Bromsgrove Primary team, encouraging them by cheering over the sound of the upbeat music playing on the PA system and surely contributing to our win.
It was a great chance for the students and stafffro0m the 11 schools to get to know each other and socialise, while many of our secondary students attended the games to support their younger friends during their breaks from lessons and even stayed to watch after school. Epicure provided a great BBQ for all those involved and the students were treated to a stay in a hotel for the weekend, along with the students from other schools, turning this into a very exciting and unique weekend for all involved.
Saturday saw both boys and girls teams playing in a huge football tournament. There were four pitches across the stadium, which the teams rotated across throughout the day until the finals, and many of the matches became intense towards the end as the winning teams had to be decided through penalty shootouts. It was an exciting day for the players and spectators, as they got to witness a heated conversation between the referee and a supportive parent discussing the eligibility of a goal. All of the teams played at least four games even if they didn’t make it to the final, so it was a very enjoyable but exhausting day, and everyone slept well that night.
Sunday was half swim meet, half athletics, with all students taking part in individual and team events. Half of the students swam in the morning, before competing at athletics in the afternoon, and vice versa. The athletics included long jump, triple jump, shot putt, discus, T-Ball throw, three springed jump, basketball heave, quoit throw, 800 metres, 600metres, 400 metres, 200 metres, 100 metres, 60 metres, 4 x 100 metres relay, and all of our competitors did well both in and out of the pool.
James Goddard, a former Olympic swimmer, had coached the students for a week before the event; in special training sessions, as well as pep talks and tips on the day. He commentated on the swimming, while Mr Dye commentated on the athletics, with some fantastic help from his team of voluntary assistants, Bromsgrove staff and students, who were also timekeeping throughout the day in blistering heat. They were very proud to be seen in their white FOBISIA shirts and baseball caps, provided by parents from Pan and Gap, as well as collecting the free printed Instagram photo stickers from Instaroid. These were some great souvenirs of the weekend, and reminders of the memories made.

At the end of the three days, Bromsgrove hosted a luxury dinner and awards ceremony at the Dusit Princess Hotel in Hua Mak with Bromsgrove collecting medals across all of the events, which was a great way to conclude a weekend of sports and socialising. We’re all looking forward to the next one.Screen Shot 2559-06-08 at 09.35.15

“The FOBISIA Primary Games finished on Sunday with the final team leaving Bangkok yesterday afternoon. It was a superb event with all students and coaches having a great time.
The BIST students involved are very tired now but are very pleased with themselves, and have every right to be after winning our largest haul of medals at a FOBISIA Games to date.

The games would not have been as successful were it not for the support of our staff. It was great to see so many staff show their faces at some point over the weekend, and my particular thanks goes to the 22 staff that gave up their Sunday to keep times, measure distances, record and input data and help to make the day very special for 270 8-11 year olds.” – Mr Elliott Dye

“It was a fantastic three day event. Bromsgrove A boys won the gold in the first competition of T ball and the team’s training they had for athletics and swimming over the last few weeks could be seen – we were able to successfully get many medals in those events.
All the students were excited and enjoyed staying at the hotel and taking part in all the activities and evening socialising! It was extremely hot but the students just continued to work so hard. It was a competition the students will never forget.” – Ms Andrea Tarrant

The FOBISIA Primary games hosted by Bromsgrove, went well. The School management, Academic staff, and Administrative staff helped each other to make a successful event. We learn a lot, gain skill, and are ready to support several big events to come. This effort aims to build an excellent learning and inspiring environment for our students to grow. And early this week three regulators from the Office of Private Education Commission, Ministry of Education, visited and inspected the fire & safety policy and procedures at our Boarding Houses. We are glad that they are satisfied with the high standard fire protection which are in place. Student safety is always our top priorities in our Boarding.

May was very busy with TISAC swimming gala’s for both our primary and secondary students. The highlight of which was our under 15 swimming team who placed second overall in TISAC, with MJ of year 9 managing 7 medals. Our primary team were not to be outdone and whilst they won less medals, the improvement in their swimming times was astonishing. Harumi of year 4 managed to take 25 seconds off her personal best time over 50m.

The highlight of this term of course was our hosting of the Primary FOBISIA Games from 27-29th May. It was the biggest FOBISIA event ever held in Group C with 11 schools attending from all over Asia and over 270 students competing.

Bromsgrove took a squad of 27 students from Years 3-6, four staff coaches not to mention the 22 other staff that volunteered to help out over the weekend.

The Games were a huge success and as a school we had considerable success, from the wonderful team gold medal in the T-ball on the opening day, through to the 50 plus medals that our young athletes managed in the swimming and athletics events on the Sunday. Amongst the many stand-out performances were Sang Sang, Jerry, Amber and Aaliyah all of whom managed multiple medals.

The GCSE students have mostly finished their exams now and the house is getting quieter, the Sixth Form are all studying well and making the best use of working together to revise any gaps in knowledge. It has been great to see some of the day students joining us in boarding to make best use of preparing for exams with their friends here. We have asked for parents to keep up updated on end of term departures so that we can best plan our end of term events. Soon we have a special trip to bounce for the primary students and this weekend coming up we are running a trip to one of the big markets for any end of year gift buying for loved ones back home. I am glad to say that the cold and illnesses that were around have now cleared up and the students are all healthy again!

Last weekend was very exciting at Bromsgrove as we hosted Fobisia Primary games. Children from Years 3 to 6 took part, it was amazing to watch the children come together as a team and build their skills and stamina. HE Advisor Introduction
Dear Parents,
I am excited to introduce myself as the new HE advisor, a role that is key in supporting students towards the next stage of their lives. As Year 12 are now coming to the end of their first year of A Level study, they will be starting to think about their future careers after BIST. The same applies to our Year 11 students as they approach the end of their iGCSE studies and think about which A Levels and BTEC courses to take to allow them to access their preferred Higher Education courses.
Recently, I have had the opportunity to begin my new role when I travelled to Hong Kong as part of an introduction to a university there. During my visit, I got a glimpse into student life and to what universities now have to offer: everything from engineering degrees that are involved in moon landings, to degree programmes in business where students can work with Microsoft.
I recognise the importance of ensuring that your son or daughter is able to take the career path that they have dreamt of, with it also being one that is best suited to their particular skills set and my Hong Kong experience has given me even more food for thought. At BIST, we promise to guide, inform and support our students with everything from researching universities to writing personal statements, to help make this happen.
I very much look forward to working with all Sixth Form students in the up and coming academic year.
Naomi Kenning
HE/Careers Advisor (August 2016)
