As term 2 draws to a close we cannot believe how much we have done so far this year. There is a buzz of learning around the school and our children and staff have been working incredibly hard. As we near Songkran I would like to take the opportunity to share some recent highlights as well as things still to come this academic year.

Day Trips for Students

It has been great to see that every year-group has been on a day trip this year, or has one coming up soon. Wider opportunities for learning outside of school are an important part of our student’s education and we embrace such opportunities to further develop and grow. Our final trips of the term are the Y6 trip to Art in Paradise and the Y2 trip to Ayutthaya.

Primary FOBISIA Maths, FOBISIA Golf and FOBISIA Games

In March we have our first ever FOBISIA Maths team competing against other students across the region. Our 4 representatives from Year 6: Victoria, Bei Bei, Toya and Hip Hop went to Vietnam this month to compete. We had 4 Primary children – Pat, Poom, Putter and Bun Bun –  compete in the FOBISIA Golf competition in Hua Hin against children from across asia; 36 holes across 2 days. We were incredibly proud of them and their success in the tournament. In May we have 29 students across year 4 – 6 going to Phuket to compete in athletics, swimming, tee-ball and football. Like our maths representative we hope the sports team show good sportsmanship and make us all proud. I am sure they will.

International Singapore Maths Competition

A number of our children across Primary participated in the Singapore maths competition last weekend. It was a tricky paper with lots of mind-straining problems for them to work out. We are very proud of all of our mathematicians that took part.

Last of the ‘Residentials’

Following successful residential trips to Khao Yai, Suphan Buri and Ayuthaya earlier this year, our year 3s are the last year-group to spend time away from home. After Songkran we look forward to them spending a night at school and enjoying the ‘Year 3 Big Sleepover’.

Parents Evening

We always enjoy opportunities to see our parents; especially when it is a chance to share how well their child is doing and celebrate their success. The second of our parent consultations this academic year allows our teachers and TAs the opportunity to do just that.

TISAC Choral Day, TISAC Arts Day and TISAC Sports

Some of our older children had the opportunity to join schools from around the city for a day of singing that will culminate in a show for parents and community. Throughout this year some children from year 1 to year 4 have been fortunate enough to join other children across the city to share in their creativity across the performing arts. And finally, children from year 3 to year 6 have been competing in football matches and tournaments across the city. They always demonstrate excellent sportsmanship and are a credit to their parents and the school.

Chinese New Year

Primary had a wonderful day to celebrate Chinese New Year this term. It started with an epic Lion Dance, and the children worked on both traditional and modern Chinese crafts and activities throughout the day. We had the big House Dumpling Making Competition which everyone got to share after they were cooked. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved.

Battle of the Bands

Bromsgrove hosted the TISAC Battle of the Bands competition this year and there were over 37 bands taking part. We entered a Primary band who did and incredible job and performed brilliantly.

Songkran Celebrations

A letter went home recently about our Songkran celebrations on the last day of term. We look forward to it very much and look forward to getting a little bit wet!

I wish you all a wonderful Songkran and hope you and your children have a well-deserved break and enjoy many festive celebrations. We look forward to the final term and all the opportunities it will bring.

Term 2:1 was yet another busy but exciting term for the Boarders. We welcomed lots of new faces to our home, meaning that we now have 110 Boarders making up our Boarding community and really adding to the family atmosphere that we all love to be a part of.

The term began with mock exams for our Year 11, 12 and 13 students and we were incredibly proud of their dedication towards their revision and studies, with many of them making use of our Academic Tutors to support their essay writing and subject knowledge. Our Primary Boarders have been truly immersed in our specialised Primary provision and have had lots of fun with their teachers during Enrichment including baking, sports, yoga and performing arts activities. Miss Gemma is also incredibly proud of the progress the Primary Boarders are making with their reading and their spelling: we hope they keep up their good work! Secondary students have also been determined to improve their academics, with many students taking part in the weekly STEM Club with Mr Barnes, which not only provides a range of activities based around science, technology engineering and maths, but has helped some of our newer students learn and use key scientific vocabulary, which will help them with their classwork.

Again this term there have been lots of exciting trips which full boarders, weekly boarders and even day students have enjoyed attending. The highlights have included Dream World, Escape Hunt, Ice Skating and Bowling, all of which wouldn’t have been possible without the support of teachers from school.

This term will also be rather busy with trips for day students and Boarders to Cartoon Network, Bounce/Rock Climbing and Dinosaur Planet, as well as our annual Boarding Songkran Party. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that ‘flexi-boarding’ is always available for day students if you would ever like your child to spend a specific duration of time within boarding.  Please contact us if your child would like to attend any of these trips or spend a few evenings in boarding.

Ms Georgina Drew and Miss Gemma Gwilliam

Our second half term is moving at an impressive pace since our return to school in January! The term began with mock exams for our Year 11, 12 and 13s which allowed students to experience how their exams will run in May and June. This is a vital learning opportunity for our senior students as they practise their knowledge learnt in class in ‘true’ exam conditions and also learn about examination rules and regulations, as well as  allowing them to experience the pressure often associated with the exam room. By sitting practice exams, students can then work out the strategies needed to achieve their best in the summer exam season. Following the release of their mock exam results, parents were invited to an additional Parent Consultation Event to discuss their child’s progress and how best to support them in the lead up to the external exams.

Term 2 has also been a term filled with events and trips as well as academic rigour! We hosted Battle of the Bands here at Bromsgrove and three of our secondary bands entered to competition. All of our bands performed brilliantly on stage and we were particularly proud of our group Black Eagle who came second in the Senior section of the competition. Congratulations!

Secondary Sports Day at Windsor Park was a resounding success despite a pesky rain shower forcing an early lunch! All of the Secondary students participated in the large variety of athletic activities on offer and earnt a large amount of participation points for their House! It was fantastic to see all students giving their all, be it taking part in an event or cheering on their fellow house students. The final standings of the day were Edwards in 1st place, followed by Taylor in 2nd and Walters in 3rd.

The first half term of Term 2 ended with Secondary Challenge Week and eight trips headed out from Windsor Park on Monday 12 February. The Year 7s went to Khao Yai, Year 8 to Chanthaburi, Year 9 to Kanchanaburi, Year 10 to The Howling Gibbon in Khao Yai, Year 11 to Sukhothai and Year 12 and Year 13 to two different venues in Chiang Mai. All the experiences gave students the opportunity to get outside of their comfort zone and for the majority of trips, to also engage in a service element.

The remainder of half term 2 is packed with further events and trips and I look forward to updating you in early April.

Secondary Principal

I am always amazed by how much the children have grown and developed by the time we reach Term 2. The children have all settled in and have begun to form strong friendships, and are also learning how to manage their feelings effectively. Many of the children have made big steps in their learning and are growing in confidence and independence each day. Our ‘word of the week’ continues to be a great success and we have now introduced a scavenger hunt for the children to take part in at break and lunch time. I am so impressed with how many of the children can remember our words of the Week and are able to use the word in a sentence. This week we have been celebrating International Science week. The children have been looking at a range of experiments throughout the week and have had the chance to share their experiments with their parents at our Stay and Play event. To end the week we had a whole school messy day were the children explored sensory activities as well as a variety of messy science experiments!

Back in February, our Year 1 students experienced what life is like as a Year 2 student, at the ‘Big school’. The children received a tour of the school delivered by our Yr 2 students, joined a typical Primary PE class, experienced a drama lesson with our drama specialist and had lunch in the canteen with Primary, as well as enjoyed breaktime with all of the Primary children. Our Year 1 parents have also been offered this wonderful opportunity to see the Windsor Park campus. Where they will be given the chance to meet with both the Primary and Secondary Principals, discuss their child’s future steps in British Education, tour the campus, as well as raise any questions you may have about their child’s transition into Year 2.

Our class trips also have happened this term. Our Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception classes all visited places that would support both their gross motor and role playing skills. Pre-Nursery went to Molly Fantasy and role played being a shopkeeper, postman and Fireman. Nursery  visited Imaginia at Emporium and were risk-takers by climbing on the large play equipment. Reception class had a wonderful time at Kidzania were they role played being doctors, policemen, pilots, CIA and many more! They even got given Kidzania money for all the jobs they completed. Our Year 1 class were able to visit the Mini Murrah Farm where they learnt about Buffalos. They fed the animals, as well as made their own pizza and ice cream!

Overall it has been another fantastic term and I am extremely grateful to have such a supportive community on our Early Years campus. Thank you to all the students, parents, teachers and staff, for your continuing hard work with supporting all the children in our care.

Early Years Principal

On Saturday, our SEAMC students had another busy and productive day of energetic and challenging Mathematical activities. The day ended with a glamorous evening gala award ceremony.

We won 2 awards this year!

Pun was part of a 3 person winning team and won a senior gold medal for Collaboration. His contribution to the lightning, innovation and open question rounds was admirable, and he showed great teamwork and communication skills and thoroughly deserved his gold medal.

Abraham won an individual senior gold medal for Strategy. His scores in the innovation, duel and pursuit rounds were outstanding, with excellent application in critical and strategic thinking. These rounds are extremely challenging and require quick decision making under pressure.

A special well done to both Pun and Abraham!

We are extremely proud of all of our SEAMC students who conducted themselves with good manners, mathematical focus and an enthusiastic charm.

Thank you also to Mrs.Dixon for organising a successful Maths trip.

FOBISIA U13 Games 2018

Final report

Following all of the preparations and hard work, the FOBISIA U13 Games 2018 proved to be the most successful U13 games for a Bromsgrove team to date with an incredible 41 individual medals and 4 team trophies. Every student was involved in each of the four sports and they all contributed hugely to the overall success of the team.

Day One

The individual events day started at the pool with swimming. Given the size of some of the other schools and their squads, this was always going to be tough, but the students made a great start to the event. After 3 hours of swimming, the team had amassed 21 medals.

The afternoon of the first day saw our students competing in athletics events at the Thanyapura athletics track. It was a long and hot afternoon which started very well in the high jump for Isabel, Selina and Canon, all of whom medalled. We continued to see impressive performances from all students throughout the afternoon with our boys 4x100m team of Yusang, Isaac, Jamie and Aidan finishing off the last event with a bronze medal. The team won another 20 medals in athletics to add to their haul of swimming medals.

Day Two

The team sports took place on the next two days, with girls’ football and boys’ basketball on the second day.

Girls’ football started early and despite illness and fatigue the girls played extremely well, not losing a single game. Their run of results and a very tough draw in their last game secured the girls’ team the bronze medal in the football segment of the competition.

The boys started their team events with basketball. The boys started slowly with a win and a very close loss. The boys then upped their game and started to score points freely, winning their remaining three games and in the process winning the gold medal in the basketball.

Day Three

The girls and boys swapped sports with the boys starting the day playing football. After the exertions of the previous two days, it was very demanding and very hard for the boys to play at the intensity that they had hoped. Despite this, the team managed to go undefeated through their five games and won the silver medal.

The girls, who were the smallest girls’ team at the games, were also struggling with fatigue, which only got worse when Sang Sang picked up an injury. Despite this, the team were able to give one last big effort to win their final game and therefore win the bronze medal in the basketball.
