Year 13 returned to the hill tribe village that the class of 2018/19 visited last year to continue building the village playground and community centre, using donations from their fundraising at school. The students’ work has really helped community and provided a resource for the villagers that is used everyday!

Year 12 went to Chiang Mai and had five days engaged in outdoor pursuits such as trekking, kayaking and a high ropes course. They also visited a local school to engage with the community and helped to paint their playground.

Six students went to Pattaya to complete their PADI Open Water course. They learnt a huge amount of diving theory and all successfully passed the written and practical exams to become certified divers.

Year 11 were based in Chiang Mai for Challenge Week and stayed in a small village where they worked with the villagers to make mud bricks and construct the walls of their community centre. They also did some jungle trekking and ecology work whilst they were there!

Year 10 visited Khao Yai for five days packed with activities such as rock climbing and kayaking. They also visited an elephant sanctuary, and took part in community service work at a homeless shelter.

Year 9 visited iCAMP in Kanchanburi and had a wonderful experience, full of exciting activities which allowed them to work on their team building skills. They also visited the Bridge over the River Kwai as an additional cultural element.

Year 8 thoroughly enjoyed their Challenge Week in Chantaburi where they learnt about turtle conservation, went snorkeling and even made mulberry juice!

Year 7 spent a fantastic five days in Khao Yai National Park where they completed some jungle trekking, developed their knowledge of the local wildlife and also learnt some camping skills! They also visited a local primary school where they helped to refresh their facilities as the community service element of the trip.

On 22 January, we hosted Bromsgrove’s Got Talent 2019: The Finals. We were so proud of our 8 finalists from both Primary and Secondary and it was wonderful to see so much talent across the school. Judging was difficult with such a range of exceptional talent, but finally it was Nama from Year 5 and Pond from Year 13 who took the prizes. Congratulations!

Year 3 Parrots have been busy learning all about our Extreme Earth. We started our topic with a bang, quite literally, as there had been a natural disaster in our classroom.

The children completed an investigation and reasoned that it couldn’t have been a tsunami as there was no water in our classrooms. They also knew it wasn’t a volcanic eruption as there are no volcanoes near us. They agreed that it had probably been an earthquake because there were things scattered across the floor as if there had been tremors.

This week, we have been baking earthquake survival snacks in case another earthquake strikes! The children worked in teams to carefully measure the ingredients needed to make their snacks and give each other verbal instructions. The children agreed that the snacks needed to give us a lot of energy as we could be trapped under some rubble.

We will use these experiences to write instructions about how to bake an earthquake survival snack and also about how to survive in an earthquake.

If you need any advice about what to do in a natural disaster – ask Year 3!
