Year 6 ended last week with our  Parent Event on our Topic: Sink, Swim, Survive.
It was a lot of fun and it was great to see the parents get involved with the team building and survival skills activities, even getting very wet in the process! They also created some very effective water colours with the guidance of their children.
The benefits of these activities can be understated but the outcome can have immense results. The children get to demonstrate their independence and skills. By taking part in these activities you the parents demonstrate that you value your children’s learning, skills and experiences.
The skills in these activities consolidate learning, linking to academic knowledge and a Growth Mindset: creating new links and broadening problem solving skills. The application helps build self-confidence; risk taking; communication and language skills.

Eight of our Year 7 and 8 students attended the annual FOBISIA Maths trip in Kuala Lumpur, from Thursday to Sunday last week.

It was a lovely educational trip; the students had lots of fun and took part in very creative and enriching Mathematical activities over two days.

The students had two 12 hour days of Mathematical challenges where they displayed and developed attributes of dedication, perseverance and application of mathematical knowledge in new and challenging environments.

Our students competed against 250 other students, 65 other teams from 35 FOBISIA schools, including Dulwich South Korea, Dulwich Beijing, British School Manila and Harrow Bangkok.

Our overall results are very encouraging: our highest team ranking was 19th, our highest individual ranking was 157th, and our overall rank across all competitive elements was 36th.

We would like to thank Alice Smith for a fantastic event & we look forward to building on our team’s success at next year’s event.

In Messy Craft ECA the students have been making slime, and having lots of fun! Our Secondary helper students have been working with the teacher to help our Primary children get very messy and creative!

We welcomed the BIST Board of Governors including Mr. Richard Brookes, a Bromsgrovian alumni with 100 years of family history at Bromsgrove and who is also a member of Bromsgrove UK Board of Governors, and Mr. Philip Hadley, BIST Board of Governors Vice Chairman and a parent of a Bromsgrovian alumni, on Thursday 21 March 2019 to join a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the ‘Hadley Hub’, an extension of the learning space above the Hadley Art Studio built in 2016.

The new THB 10 Million  space will assist in catering for the needs of the school’s growing student numbers and diverse learning opportunities. The total space is 237 sq.m and  will offer students additional facilities for multi-purpose uses: lessons, extra-curricular activities, performing arts, workshops, exam centre and more. We are delighted with our latest addition to the Windsor Park Campus.

Year 3 Toucans have been busy continuing to learn all about our Extreme Earth. We didn’t know how long ago volcanoes started to erupt until this week, when we placed famous eruptions on a timeline. Children have mastered the skill of creating and organising dates.

Toucans have also written a recount based on the famous story ‘Escape from Pompeii’. They wrote it from the main character, Tranio’s, point of view.

Children have also created a dramatised version of the story, using it to create scenes to share vital parts of the story and how they escaped from the erupting volcano. They also portrayed Tranio and Livia’s emotions when they realised everyone from Pompeii had been killed.

Toucan’s arty flair has also been utilised when creating several pieces of art, stemming from tsunami’s with paint, volcanoes with oil pastels and the The Great Wave off Kanagawa, with fine colour pen.

If you need any advice about how to portray a natural disaster through art – ask Year 3!

On Sunday 17th March BIST Under 9 football team took part in a 5 a-side football tournament at RIS Swiss Section. Sporting our excellent new kits, we played in 4 games against a very high level of opposition. I was very proud of the boys who kept giving their all throughout the tournament; they never gave up and kept trying all the way through. Well done boys and let’s enjoy our next Football Festival on 2nd April.

Bromsgrove U11 boys team played in the annual RIS Swiss Youth Cup 2019 and achieved a runners up medal. Bromsgrove topped the group stages beating the opposition. The boys were happy with the team performance and will be looking forward to trying again for silverware in the TISAC championships on Saturday 30 March.

Pelicans have found learning about Earth and Space this term simply astronomical! From researching the movement of planets, to creating space-inspired abstract art; from designing our own space school, to investigating the conspiracies around the moon landing; Pelicans are really engaged and excited about their learning. This week, we have been learning about the difference between the weather in the UK and that in the tropics. Following our specific inquiries into different tropical places around the globe; the children got into pairs to create their own weather reports about their chosen city. The class have utilised their amazing English language skills to experiment with complex new vocabulary, as well as showing off their performance and presenting skills during their reports. Teamwork and reflection were two of the most important skills needed to make this task a success and all children demonstrated enthusiasm and creativity in their groups. Pop into Pelicans and ask us about the weather in the tropics – we are sure you will be impressed!
