After our golf activity yesterday evening, campers and staff had the unique opportunity to celebrate Jesper’s 9th birthday with song and cake! We do not have the chance to celebrate campers’ birthdays every year, so this was a great chance for Jesper to enjoy his special moment with his new friends at camp. What a treat!

Today’s lessons were fantastic, and campers’ speaking skills and confidence are greatly improving every day! Mr Ben taught campers vocabulary and phrases necessary to survive in an English-speaking school. Now, they have all practiced asking common questions, and they know just what to say when speaking politely with teachers and classmates. In Mr Devitt’s class, campers learned about the world of sports, and they competed in connecting ideas and spelling words related to sports. This was a very active lesson, and our older campers even got to launch balloon-powered straws down a kind of zip line in order to spell out the correct sports word or phrase. It might sound like a lot of fun, but campers are learning much more than they realize. In Mr J’s class, campers learned about water transportation, and they became familiar with common and not-so-common modes of getting around in and on the world’s waterways.

In our Arts and Crafts session today, once again, Ms Myrille and Ms Mind have outdone themselves in coming up with interesting and engaging projects for campers. As the papier-mâché pizza slices are still not quite dry and ready for the next step, campers began working on a reflection project. This art lesson was all about drawing the mirror-like reflections you might see in the eyes and sunglasses of others. Younger campers drew and colored things that are special to them as the reflections in a pair of sunglasses, while older campers drew their thoughtful ideas as you might see them reflected in a person’s eye.

Reflection is a big part of learning at Bromsgrove, and in addition to our art project, today, campers were all asked to write about their favorite activities at camp so far in the form of a letter home. This only seemed fitting after a week of camp and countless activities and experiences. Most of them said their new friends are the best part of camp, while they also have loved the trips and activities. Many wrote about the things they are still looking forward to at camp, and tomorrow’s water park trip was frequently mentioned. While campers seem to be having the time of their lives, a few of them did mention how much they love and miss their moms and dads. It has been an exceptional first week here at Bromsgrove, and we are all looking forward to next week and the second half of camp!

Campers were back in classes today after a great day on the farm yesterday, and it was wonderful to hear how much they all enjoyed their experiences with the animals and workshop activities. Campers shared their favorite memories and many were very bubbly and talkative!
In lessons, Mr Ben taught campers how to discuss the weather. Each got a chance to forecast the weather from their home country in front of the group like real weather forecasters. In arts and crafts, Ms Myrille and Ms Mind began a two-day Papier-mâché pizza slice project with campers, and tomorrow everyone will add their favorite toppings to their delicious (looking) pizza slices. Mr Devitt took campers out of the classroom and got them moving about a bit, as they went on a “Comparatives and Superlatives Scavenger Hunt” to find out who was good, better, and best. In Mr J’s classroom, campers took their turn reaching inside the “Mystery Box” and describing the sizes, textures, shapes, and materials of the items inside.
Our group activity today was the “Spaghetti Tower Challenge.” Campers were divided into small groups and tasked with building the tallest tower they could using only dry spaghetti, a bag of marshmallows and a single half-meter-long piece of masking tape. There were some impressive feats of architecture along with some crumbling and collapsing structures, but all campers had a lot of fun, and it truly was lovely to see how well they are learning to bond and work together. After classes ended, campers left campus in vans on their way to the beautiful golf facilities adjacent to our school. Some were very eager to show off their golf swing, and others are picking up the club for the first time, but all are in for yet another fantastic camp memory!

It was so lovely to join the classes today for our Animals Mini Adventure. The children enjoyed getting creative in Ms Jessica’s and Ms Jen’s classrooms, making under the sea themed prints and building their own binoculars ready for tomorrow’s trip to Safari World. The children also got very messy in the different sensory areas that were set up across the camp. What a fabulous day!

In Summer Camp today, we created a story map for ‘Dear Zoo’ and read the story ‘Ronald the Rhino’. In preparation for our safari/habitat adventure, which now takes place tomorrow, we have been making binoculars to help us explore!!

After an evening in the library on Tuesday evening, our boarders got ready to visit Mini Murrah Farm the next day.
Mini Murrah Farm houses several facilities for children and groups. After we first arrived, our Summer Camp students learned how to make pizzas that they had for their own lunch. Afterwards we learned how to make our own ice cream and our own organic hand made soap. As left our ice cream to cool in the freezer and our soap to harden, our students explored the farm, playing and feeding the various animals spread through out the farm. Mini Mirrah Farm is home to pigs, ducks, rabbits and miniature buffalo, all of which our students got to bond with. After eating our well deserved home made ice cream to cool off, our students began making their way back to school.

Tuesday was an engaging and energetic day in day school. Campers are interacting and making lots of friends in classes and during group activities around campus. The day began with morning classes in which campers are becoming more courageous and outgoing, and that also means more talkative! That is a great thing at an English camp, and we are happy with their progress already!

In lessons, campers demonstrated their previous knowledge of land transportation, and they learned how to speak about ways of getting around the world. Then, they moved on to Arts & Crafts, and they all got more exposure to Thai culture, as they learned to weave materials together in the traditional Thai style. Later, they all practiced describing different kinds of animals, and they played games to show how much they know on the subject. This will come in very handy on our farm trip tomorrow. Finally, campers moved to a lesson in an imaginary doctor’s office, and they all took part in role-play games aimed to help them speak about ailments and injuries at the doctor’s office.

As a group activity before lunch, everyone participated in our annual “Paper Drop Competition.” This is a favorite at camp, and each camper designed a paper vehicle and competed to see which would take the longest time to drop when released from the second floor mezzanine. It was an opportunity for campers to show their creativity and ingenuity, and they all enjoyed cheering for one another. After a heavy rain at lunch today, the skies cleared, and the warm sun returned in time for a lovely afternoon of sports! The P.E. staff collected the campers, and all played 2 different sports: tee-ball and Capture the Flag. Ask your campers about their day, and we are sure they will have a lot to tell you about! Thailand is known as “The Land of Smiles,” and today at Bromsgrove, it’s easy to see why.

Today was our first full day of English lessons, and campers were eager to show what they were capable of. In preparation for our farm trip this Wednesday, Mr Ben focused on the theme of “farm animals” which culminated with campers preparing and performing a puppet show. In Mr Devitt’s class, the boys and girls learned new ways to describe things as they improved their knowlege of adjectives. Ms Myrille and Ms Mind guided our campers through an art project all about facial symmetry which was enjoyed by all. They are all quite artistic! Mr J introduced campers to many of Bangkok’s beautiful and historical landmarks, and we played a new game called “Traffic Lights” in which campers showed how well they could follow traffic directions in English.
After a full day of English lessons, art, and fun group activities, our campers enjoyed a Thai cooking experience. Campers learned to prepare and cook two delicious staples of any Thai menu: Kanom Krok and spring rolls! All had fun learning about Thai food and culture as they quickly devoured their after school snacks.
