After our first fast and furious four weeks of school, our boarders have really done a fabulous job in becoming familiar with their class schedules in day school and settling into their new routines in boarding. They are improving their organization skills and studying hard in their daily Academic Development periods. On Thursdays, our “Thursday Team Time” gives boarders a great chance to get some exercise as they compete with their house teams, and it always challenges them to work together and have fun!

Boarding weekend trips have made a strong start this year, and we have already gone on five trips! Last weekend our boarders visited Bounce trampoline arena at EmQuartier in the city centre. This was a great chance for our boys and girls to show how well they could jump, flip, and do stunts, as they laughed and played together. We have many more trips planned for Term 1 including a trip to Chatuchak market, 3-D Museum, and even a dreamy trip to Snowtown just in time for the Christmas Holiday. We encourage boarders to sign up early, so they don’t miss out on these great opportunities to have fun with friends as they improve social skills and learn about activities in and around Bangkok.

On campus, and when they are not studying, our boarders are extremely active and can be found playing in the Sports Hall, splashing in the swimming pool, or going on bike rides around Windsor Park Golf Course or to 7-11 to pick up some snacks. We have also begun “The Morning Mile” which is an opportunity for boarders and staff to go for an early morning run before school three times a week. The turnout has been great for these activities, and it is clear that BIST boarders love overcoming challenges, both mental and physical.

In week four we introduced a new support system in boarding. Each boarder has been paired with a buddy and they know they can always turn to their buddies for anything they need. All buddy pairs have been assigned to one of six families in each house, and the families are each overseen by older secondary boarders who serve as Prefects. This week, new buddies and families worked together and competed against other families in our first “Family Night” event. The event was a great way for boarders to meet and get to know their new buddies and have a great time working together.

With four weeks to go before the half-term break, there is still much work to do, but what a great year it has been so far! We truly couldn’t be happier about the way our boarders have shown they can thrive in the boarding environment which we like to think of as their home away from home.

Last half term, Bromsgrove International School hosted the TISAC Secondary Choral Day 2019. Over 150 students and teachers from eight TISAC schools joined together for a fun and successful day, learning and performing a selection of songs from the movies. Please see the highlights and concert video!

On Thursday 17 October, the Year 13 A Level class presented an original devised piece based on a key scene from Tennessee Williams’ ‘The Glass Menagerie’. Their piece explored the themes of fragmented memory, loss and perceptions of reality, using the techniques of the contemporary theatre company Frantic Assembly. Their performances were captivating and moving and the piece was thoroughly enjoyed by a very supportive audience made up of BIST students and staff. Well done to Ben, Nelly and Matthew for their incredible work and thank you to the BIST community for your support in giving up your lunchtime to watch our performance.

Big congratulations to Harumi for winning third place in the Junior Tri Dash Thailand 2019 series in 11-12 years old category. Her accumulation score was a fantastic 600. Participating in this competition shows that Harumi embodies the Bromsgrove Learner Traits, demonstrating determination and being a risk taker. We are proud of you. Well done!

On Wednesday 16 October we hosted our first Primary and Secondary Open Morning for this academic year. Visiting families had the opportunity to meet our Headmaster, Head of Primary, Head of Secondary and Head of Boarding as well as see our classrooms and our amazing facilities such as Performing Arts Centre, Primary playground, learning areas, sports facilities and boarding houses. Visitors were impressed with what they experienced. We have facilities and learning programmes that support our students’ interests. Moreover, our students are confident and determined learners but most importantly they are happy and respectful citizens.

Getting back into a regular routine in Year 6 after a busy STEAM Week has had quite a calming effect. The children have been busy and enjoying our activities.

In Maths we have been using a written methods for long division. The children have gained confidence using an effective long division method and have been challenged to solve long division problems involving reasoning and variation. We have also been using Manga High, an online Maths challenge App (Ninja Challenge this week). It is easy to access on any device and the children gain points for each activity. It is really useful to consolidate and improve quick mental skills – make sure your child is involved!

Have you ever wanted to find out about the dinosaurs? Then ask Year 3 Parrots! Last week the children became experts on their favourite dinosaur, using the iPads to research where they lived, what they ate and lots of other fascinating facts. They loved using actions to help them remember what they wanted to say about their dinosaur. These actions helped the children write their own fact-filled reports. Can you spot the: Brachiosaurus, Pterodactyl, Spinosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops?

On Wednesday 10 October, we celebrated Hangul Day a traditional Korean festival and one of the many cultural events that we enjoy here at Bromsgrove. Students, teachers, and staff had an opportunity to learn how to write their names in Korean calligraphy as well as play Tuho, a Korean traditional game.
