Secondary

AGE 11-16

The Secondary phase at BIST is characterised by its vibrant learning environment and the warm and supportive pastoral provision provided by our teaching staff. We follow a curriculum based upon the English National Curriculum, so that our students are fully prepared for the external exams in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.

We ensure that we embody the very best elements of this curriculum, whilst tailoring it to fit the needs of our students and to reflect our international setting. Our curriculum has the Bromsgrove Learner Profile attributes at its heart, promoting risk-taking, kindness, the ability to work in a team, positivity and independence.

We offer a broad curriculum that allows for increased personalisation as students progress through the key stages. The “Bromsgrove Experience” encompasses many elements that contribute to the development of confident, happy young achievers, ready for the world beyond. 17

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Learning and teaching focuses on developing the foundations for each child’s secondary school career. Students receive experienced instruction in all subjects, but there are many opportunities to transfer their skills as they also embark on cross curricular projects and wider learning opportunities.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

Students study for their iGCSEs/GCSEs. The core curriculum consists of English, Mathematics and Science, with a further options drawn from a variety of disciplines. The structure of our curriculum means we can tailor options, allowing the most able to access 10 subjects, while those who require more support will study fewer.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)

Students study for their A Levels or BTEC Diploma courses, choosing four choices from the wide selection on offer, according to the option blocks available. Students will typically need to have attained a minimum of a B grade at IGCSE/GCSE level before embarking upon the A Level course in that subject.

Our school day begins with either an assembly or pastoral tutor time. The bespoke pastoral programme at BIST has been designed to ensure all students can develop in a safe, reflective and supportive environment. During morning tutor time, we set the tone for a productive day of learning.

In addition to their qualifications, students are continually cultivating an intellectual curiosity that will lead them to success. Our extra-curricular and enrichment programme is broad and diverse (with over 40 activities on offer), ensuring that every student has the chance to develop new skills and face new challenges. Our annual residential trips take students ‘out of their comfort zone’ and hone their teamwork skills in a safe but challenging environment away from the school campus. Finally, our older students have the chance to join our engaging Student Leadership programme, where they have the chance to develop key leadership skills and help shape the future of the school, thereby completing the Bromsgrove Experience very much at the helm.
